The Association For The Mentally Challenged (AMC) was founded in 1960 by Dr. D. L.N. Murthy Rao. Today, AMC is a NGO that supports over 200 children, adolescents and adults. AMC's aim is to educate, train and rehabilitate individuals with intellectual disability disorder (IDD) and helps them achieve a sense of empowerment . AMC also extends support to the families of these individuals and handholds them in their journey of caring for their wards with special needs. .

The Association runs.

  • Special School: Provides special education for children with IDD who are between 6 and 16 years of age and equips them with life skills
  • Multi-category Vocational Training Center: Trains adolescents and adults with IDD in various vocations
  • AMC Sheltered workshop: Offers gainful employment to the adults who have acquired skills and are able to work under minimum supervision .
  • Day Care Centre: Cares for 15 to 20 severely affected individuals who are engaged through various activities that keeps them calm and helps them with their occupational therapy
  • Child guidance clinic: A team consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers provide comprehensive assessment and guidance. They address the needs of the beneficiaries, the staff and the parents of beneficiaries
  • Parents Self Help Group:Parents of beneficiaries at AMC have formed a self-help group which works to mobilise resources for medicines, organises sports day at AMC and also facilitates various benefits from the State and the Central Government like NIRAMAYA Scheme. This platform helps these parents support each other in facing everyday challenges in raising a special child. . Beneficiaries are served Milk, Porridge, Vitamin supplements , Fruits, Vegetables, Eggs and Nutritious lunch everyday. Uniforms, Shoes & Bags are supplied Transport facility for everyday commute Outdoor activities like visits to Exhibitions, Fairs, Picnic, etc.,
  • All these services provided at AMC are free of cost to the beneficiaries.
